Le Fond de l’Air is a curatorial project which runs from February til December 2026. It takes place in the project Space Studiolo of Kunsthaus Biel/Centre d’art Bienne.
In the shady alleyway behind the Kunsthaus, moss covers the damp stones. The sun barely manages to reach a patch on the wall of the Espace Libre. A small green dot moves across this warm, fuzzy spot. An ant is carrying a piece of a leaf. A little above it, another one – no, two, three, a whole trail of ants can be seen. And a little below that, another dot, slightly larger and yellow and black striped. A snail carries its shell in the same direction, along the wall up to the passage connecting the two buildings. And there; a lizard, a grasshopper and a spider. They too are on their way up to the open window, where a blackbird is already sitting and the trail of ants disappears into the twilight of the interior. Strange noises come from there, a murmur, a harple and a whissling. —invitation text, February 2026
The window remains open
throughout the year.
As the space gradually changes and becomes inhabited by the surrounding fauna and flora, works of invited artists may appear, like withered leafs blown in through the window by the wind. No openings will be held for the exhibitions, and a work of art may be exhibited for one day or remain installed for the duration of the project. Additional information is presented in the display case.
The Studiolo is an experimental space at the KBCB that is made available to invited artists for a whole year. The space is accessible during opening hours. In 2026, the Studiolo is run by the exhibition and residency project La Dépendance from Saint-Imier. Le Fond de l’Air is curated by Jan van Oordt and Mathis Pfäffli.
